Ethiopia violates the sovereignty of Somalia’s territorial sea by signing MoU with Somaliland

A so-called memorandum of understanding was signed between Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed and the outgoing president of Somaliland Muse Bihi Abdi who was on a state visit to Ethiopia since Sunday.

there was no official or publicized plan Somali federal government that states Ethiopia to gain a sea from Somalia through diplomatic ties with the federal government of Somalia. Both Ethiopia and Somalia are neighboring countries in the Horn of Africa region, and they have had historical and diplomatic relations with each other.

The sovereignty of a coastal State extends, beyond its land territory and internal waters and, in the case of an archipelagic State, its archipelagic waters, to an adjacent belt of sea, described as the territorial sea. The sovereignty over the territorial seas is exercised subject to the UN convention and other rules of international law.

Ethiopia didn’t give careful consideration, negotiation, and adherence to international laws and agreements and denied all diplomatic relations with the Federal Republic of Somalia.

Somali Politicians criticized this MoU and pointed out that this is aggressive against the sovereignty of Somalia and called for unity against this issue.

The deal on Somaliland’s Berbera port comes months after Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed said the country should assert its right to access the Red Sea, rousing regional concerns. On the southern coast of the Gulf of Aden, Berbera offers an African base at the entrance to the Red Sea and the gateway to the Suez Canal.
