H.E Hassan Sheikh Mohamud is a Somali politician who served as the President of Somalia from 2012 to 2017. He was born on November 29, 1955, in Jalalaqsi, Hiran region, Somalia.

President Mohamud completed his early education in Somalia and later pursued higher studies abroad. He obtained a bachelor’s degree in technical education from the Somali National University and a master’s degree in technical education from Bhopal University in India.

Before entering politics, Mohamud worked as a lecturer and consultant in various educational institutions and organizations. He was actively involved in promoting education and development in Somalia, particularly in the field of technical education and vocational training.

The President of Somalia, Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, was included in a group of 166 students who have been awarded postgraduate degrees by the Somali branch of the United Nations-mandated University for Peace.

The event brought together 29 women and 137 men in the Somali capital, Mogadishu, for a graduation ceremony at the institution.

The high-level qualifications, including the first doctorates, are set to contribute to the country’s pool of highly skilled workers. According to the UN, Somalia’s Ninth National Development Plan, covering the 2020-24 period, lists education as a key sector vital for the country’s prosperity.

The president, highlighting the importance of education in the war-torn country’s future development, pledged to create a scholarship fund to support the first 100 students expressing an interest in pursuing doctoral degrees at the university.

In 2011, Mohamud emerged as a prominent figure in Somali politics and was elected as the President of Somalia in September 2012. His election was considered a milestone in the country’s political transition, as he was the first president to be chosen through a process of voting by members of parliament. His victory was seen as a symbol of progress in Somalia’s ongoing state-building efforts.

During his presidency, Mohamud prioritized the restoration of security, reconciliation, and the establishment of effective governance structures. He sought to bring together various political factions and clans to foster national unity and stability.
