Ambassador Ilyas: Somalia demands Arab League for an urgent meeting

LM-Cairo, 04 January 2024- The Somali government has demanded an urgent meeting of Arab foreign ministers. The Ambassador of the Federal Republic of Somalia to Egypt and the Permanent Representative of the Arab League, Ambassador Ilyas Sheikh Omar announced that Somalia has submitted a request to the Arab League to hold an urgent meeting of the Council of Ministers of Foreign Affairs of the Arab League to discuss the consequences of illegally ‘null and avoid’ agreement signed between Ethiopia and Somaliland.

The Arab League is required to take a united Arab role on this issue and respond to the clear violation of Ethiopia against the independence and territorial integrity of the Federal Republic of Somalia.

In a significant development, Somalia has issued a demand for an urgent summit with regional and international leaders. The call for the meeting signals Ethiopia’s interference in Somalia’s demotic affairs pressing issues requiring immediate attention and a collaborative approach to finding ways.

The meeting of the Arab League would aim to address the immediate challenges rising in neighboring countries Somalia and Ethiopia after the Illegal MoU signed in Addis-Ababa by Ethiopia with the Somaliland Administration without the knowledge and consent of the Federal Republic of Somalia.

The Somali Government is committed to defending its citizens protecting its territory and sea and devising strategies to restore stability and ensure the well-being of the nation and its citizens.
