Mogadishu (LM) Political leaders across Somalia have condemned the recent clashes in Raskamboni, calling for an immediate ceasefire as the nation grapples with the remnants of civil strife, social disunity, and a fragile governmental structure.

In a joint statement issued by Former President Sharif Sheik Ahmed, Former Prime Minister Hassan Ali Kheire, and Federal MP Abdirahman Abdishakur,  they emphasized that the principles of rebuilding the government and adhering to the interim constitution clearly state that the army should not be politicized. “The federal government troops deployed to Raskamboni are fighting against their Somali brothers,” the leaders noted, stressing that these forces should instead unite their efforts to combat the real threat posed by terrorists.

The leaders urged all parties involved to prioritize dialogue and reconciliation, reinforcing the need for peace and stability in a country still recovering from decades of conflict. They highlighted that the misuse of military power against fellow citizens undermines the progress made towards unity and security.

As calls for calm intensify, the political landscape remains charged, and the hope for a peaceful resolution hangs in the balance. The leaders reiterated their commitment to fostering an inclusive environment where all factions can work together for the betterment of Somalia.

Mogadishu (LM) The recent clashes in Raskambooni have been described as a tragic escalation, with critics pointing fingers at President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud for instigating conflict among the National Army, which is supposed to defend the nation. Observers are alarmed that forces trained for national defense are now turning against each other.

Hassan Mohamed Hussein knows as (Mungaab)  former Banadir governer and Mayor of Mogadishu, A prominent political figure stated, “Only President Hassan Sheikh is responsible for what happened there today. He has instigated conflict in a peaceful area and used the National Army for ulterior political interests.” This sentiment reflects a growing frustration among various factions within the country.

Mungaab continued, urging President Hassan to “come back to the discussion table” and halt the perceived invasion of the regional administration, warning that such actions are further dividing the Somali community. The call for dialogue underscores the need for unity in a nation grappling with internal strife and external threats.

The situation is particularly concerning as political tensions rise, with some leaders expressing a willingness to “force someone who has a different opinion than me.” This rhetoric raises fears of deepening divisions and potential violence as Somalia continues to navigate its complex political landscape.

As the nation seeks stability, the urgent need for reconciliation and dialogue among all parties is more critical than ever. The international community is closely monitoring the situation, hoping for a peaceful resolution that prioritizes the unity and security of the Somali people.

Clashes erupted on Wednesday between forces from Somalia’s federal government and the Jubbaland State, raising alarms about the impact of internal rivalries on the ongoing battle against Shabaab. The violence in this strategically important region follows a contested election in Jubbaland, conducted despite opposition from the federal authorities in Mogadishu.

Somali Defence Minister Abdulkadir Mohamed Nur stated that the Jubbaland forces initiated the clashes. In a press statement, he remarked, “Early this morning, Jubbaland forces attacked the Somali federal military troops that were deployed in Lower Jubba to take bases withdrawn from by ATMIS,” referring to the African Union Transition Mission in Somalia.

The conflict has resulted in significant casualties, with Major Abdirahman Osman, a Jubbaland soldier, confirming to Reuters that at least ten people have been killed in the fighting. This escalation comes at a critical time, just weeks before the expiration of the African Union peacekeeping force’s mandate, heightening concerns about the potential vacuum in security that may follow.

The ongoing violence underscores the precarious situation in Somalia, where internal divisions threaten to undermine efforts to combat al Shabaab and stabilize the region. As both sides brace for further confrontations, the international community is watching closely, hoping for a resolution that can refocus efforts on countering the persistent threat posed by militant groups.

Mogadishu (LM) In a disturbing incident that has raised serious concerns about conduct within the halls of power, a federal police officer was hospitalized following an alleged assault by MP Hassan Abdi Ismail known as (Hassan Firimbi) during a parliamentary session. The altercation occurred amidst a heated debate over law enforcement policies, leading to a physical confrontation that left the officer with injuries requiring medical attention.

Eyewitnesses reported that tensions escalated rapidly during the session, culminating in the MP allegedly pushing and shoving the officer. The altercation disrupted proceedings, prompting immediate intervention from other parliamentarians who sought to de-escalate the situation.

The injured officer was taken to Hussen Mohamed Hassan where they were treated for injuries sustained during the incident. Medical staff reported that the officer is in stable condition but will require further observation. The officer’s union has condemned the assault, calling it an attack on the rule of law and the integrity of law enforcement.

n a show of solidarity and support, several Members of Parliament (MPs) and the Chief Police Commander Gen. Asad Osman visited the federal police officer who was hospitalized following an alleged assault by an MP during a parliamentary session.  “Our police officers put their lives on the line to protect us, and they deserve our utmost respect, not violence.” Said Senater Dr. Dufle.

“This is not just an assault on an individual; it is an assault on the rule of law,” said another MP Farhia during a press conference.

In response to the incident, “I regret the events that transpired and extend my apologies to the officer involved,” said Hassan Firimbi speaking to the media.  However, this has done little to quell public outrage, with calls for accountability mounting from various quarters.

The police department has confirmed that an internal investigation is underway, and legal action against the MP is being considered. The incident highlights the delicate relationship between lawmakers and law enforcement, raising questions about the standards of behavior expected from elected officials.

The arrest warrant for Ahmed Islam Mohammed (“Madobe”), the president of Jubaland Regional State signifies a severe escalation in tensions between the federal government in Mogadishu and regional authorities. The charges of treason and conspiracy underscore the deep political rifts affecting governance in Somalia.

The backdrop of Madobe’s controversial re-election through an indirect process, which Mogadishu opposed, sets the stage for the current conflict. This political strife illustrates the challenges of regional governance and the struggle for legitimacy in Somali politics.

The federal government’s deployment of troops, including specialized units, to Ras Kamboni indicates a proactive approach to exert control over the region. This military action is a response to perceived threats posed by Madobe’s leadership and the potential instability following the election.

Madobe’s mobilization of his regional forces reflects a defensive posture, suggesting he is prepared to contest the federal government’s actions. This could lead to increased tensions and potential conflict in the region.

The approval of the Independent Electoral and Boundary Commission by the Federal Parliament is a pivotal development aimed at fostering transparent electoral processes. However, the protests from opposition MPs highlight the contentious nature of political reforms and the divisions within the parliament.

The establishment of the electoral commission is crucial for Somalia’s aspirations for a more democratic governance structure, particularly the goal of implementing a “One Person, One Vote” system. Yet, the opposition and protests indicate significant resistance from certain factions, which could hinder progress.

The conflict illustrates the ongoing struggle for political legitimacy in Somalia, as both the federal government and regional leaders seek to assert their authority.

The mobilization of troops by both the federal government and regional authorities reflects a troubling trend where military actions may increasingly influence political outcomes.

The establishment of the electoral commission represents a hope for democratic reform, but the opposition and protests highlight the difficult realities of implementing such changes in a divided political landscape.

Experts believe that the country falls in the complexity of the situation emphasizing the interplay of political tensions, military actions, and efforts toward electoral reform. The ongoing developments present significant challenges for stability and governance in the country, as various factions navigate their interests amid a backdrop of conflict and reform. This nuanced understanding is crucial for any discussion about Somalia’s future trajectory.
