By Mogadishu (LM) June 26th is celebrated as Somali Independence Day. On this day in 1960, Somalia gained independence from colonial rule. It marked the end of the trusteeship period, during which Somalia was under Italian and British administration.
Somali Independence Day holds great significance for the Somali people as it symbolizes our freedom and the establishment of our sovereign nation. It is a day of national pride and unity, commemorated with various events and celebrations throughout Somalia and by Somali communities worldwide.
On this day, Somalis honor the sacrifices made by their forefathers in the struggle for independence. It is an opportunity to reflect on the progress made since independence and to reaffirm their commitment to building a prosperous and united Somalia.
Somali President H.E Hassan Sheikh Mohamud celebrated with hundreds of Somali people on this day after a colorful event at Villa Somalia.
The President urged the Somali people to stand firm for their unity and independence, noting that the government is committed and must protect the independence and existence of Somalia.
President Hassan Sheikh spoke strongly about the violation of the Ethiopian government against the independence of Somalia, he said that the illegal agreement between Muse Bihi and the Prime Minister of Ethiopia is directly against the nationalism and unity of Somalia.
“What we are against is not development and increased cooperation, but the taking of our land. We did not agree to take a meter of our land. We did not go to Berbera Port yesterday, so we did not discuss it, because it was clear to us that it was not taken.” It is a port for Somalis, but today’s situation is different.’ The president said.
The President of the Republic pointed out the importance of celebrating the struggle of the Northern regions of Somalia for the freedom of the country, and he praised the efforts and unity of the Somali people in order to realize the national goals and aspirations left by our forefathers.
The flag-raising ceremonies, parades, cultural performances, speeches by government officials, and community gatherings were done. It is a time for Somalis to come together, showcase their rich cultural heritage, and express their hopes for a brighter future.
