Somaliland’s Minister of Defense Resigns, prompting ‘null and avoid’ MoU Signed in Addis-Ababa

LM-Hergisa, 7 January 2024- Somaliland’s Administration was hit with a significant political development today as the Minister of Defense, Abdiqani Ateye tendered his resignation, marking an unexpected MoU signed in Addis-Abab 1st January 2024 which was about the greed of Ethiopia to secure access to Somalia’s Sea. The resignation, effective immediately, has sparked speculation about the reasons behind the decision that Muse Behi entered the deal with Ethiopia and raised questions about the future direction of the administration.

Mr. Abdiqani who has served as Minister of Defense for years has been widely regarded as a capable and dedicated leader in the defense sector. his tenure was marked by notable achievements, including modernizing the armed forces, strengthening Administration security measures, and fostering international collaboration on defense initiatives. The sudden resignation has left many surprised and curious about the circumstances surrounding the Somaliland Administration.

Demonstrations against Ethiopia’s ambitions and the outgoing President of Somaliland, Muse Bihi, took place today in the town of Borama in the north-west of Somalia, with the people saying, ‘Our sea is not for sale. The minister told Horyaal TV based in Hargeisa and said that he will never accept that Somali land is led by Ethiopians.

The MoU between Ethiopia and Muse Behi has been internationally denounced and the federal Republic of Somalia led by H.E Hassan Sheikh Mohamud has signed the Law Cancellation Agreement approved by the federal Parliament of Somalia.
